Social Understanding, Gender and Sexuality
Courses for teachers, health professionals, parents and the general community
Developing the Self Developing the World offer lectures and one to three day trainings on the theme of Social Understanding Gender & Sexuality in various communities across Australia, America and the United Kingdom. The sample outlines listed below can be adapted to meet the specific needs of the participants.
Schools whose students are receiving the curriculum will also receive parent lectures to inform and support parents in regards to the content delivered to the students. The sample lectures are listed further down this page.
Working Wholistically with Social Understanding, Gender & Sexuality
A three by three day training suited to people working in the areas of health and education who recognise the necessity of working holistically in the changing needs of out time. It supports in the preparation of the inner life towards meeting young people and integrating the content in such a way that it is a living reality in the life of the adult. An individual can choose to attend any or all of the courses and will receive a Certificate of Completion upon attending the set of three courses.
We explore how differences and similarities work in child development, human relationships and spiritual development. Learning to support this aspect of the health and wellbeing of another’s relationship to gender and sexuality results in greater resilience and confidence in their relationship to the wider community.
The three courses are:
The Understanding of Being More Than Male and Female
( 2- 3 days)
This course provides the anthroposophical understanding of being more than male and female and how to express the evolving and developing pictures of gender and sexuality to students in primary and secondary school. It will also include the common struggles that are experienced during childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. Supporting this aspect of the health and wellbeing of the individual child’s relationship to gender and sexuality results in greater resilience and confidence in their growing relationship to the wider community.
Understanding and Developing the Masculine and Feminine Forces Towards Harmony
(2 – 3 days)
From an esoteric view of the human being, it can be understood that within the individual there are masculine and feminine forces that are necessary for deeper soul development. This course will explore the evolving of these masculine and feminine forces within the individual from childhood to adulthood, what occurs when there are hindrances in this process and how these may be expressed in adolescent and adult sexuality and social behaviors. Using these insights we can support the balance of these primary forces throughout childhood to adolescence as well as discover how to rebalance ourselves through inner development exercises that support both the masculine and feminine forces required for the awakening of inner capacities.
Understanding Individual Responsibility in Working Towards New Community
(2 – 3 days)
In community life we learn consciously and unconsciously from each other. Rudolf Steiner stated that to be an educator in the Consciousness-soul Age we need to be able to elicit the individuality. This course focuses on how to perceive support and elicit the true nature of the individual human being from childhood to adulthood. We will explore the changing role and the need for new community responsibility, that can provide young people with what is needed in the growing self-consciousness and separation that they are facing. We look at how young people can be supported within a community that respects, encourages and expands each individual’s qualities as the basis for the modern rites of passage into adulthood.
Teaching Children about Puberty and Sexuality (1 day)
This half to one day workshop looks at the child and adolescent’s development through puberty – the physical characteristics, the emotional and feeling life changes, and their overall health at this time. It will help to bring an understanding of how to support the child/adolescent who is going through this transition. It will also address some of the questions and challenges that adults experience. The workshop is open and relevant to adults caring for children of all ages.
Recognising The Spirit in Diverse Gender & Sexuality - Spiritual Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality (1 day or lecture)
In all stages of collective growth and development, understanding the spiritual impulses that support each individual and the collective consciousness helps bring about true community change. Working to overcome individual biases and imbalances will prepare us to more readily awaken directly to that spiritual wisdom that brings health and harmony into the evolving reality of gender and sexuality within both individuals and society as a whole. This has been delivered as a lecture within an LGBTQ community workshop day.
Community Lectures to Complement the Curriculum (1.5 hours)
Lectures for parents and school staff complement the Wellbeing Curriculum so that the whole community have the opportunity to carry this understanding.
For parents and teachers of children under 11 years old, facilitators bring a guide to recognise the milestones of development and how to work wholistically with gender and sexuality before the consciousness changes at puberty.
Facilitators offer an open meeting with the parents and teachers of the 11 – 14 years olds prior to the class sessions.. This enables parents and teachers to be prepared for questions from the students that may arise from the content that is presented.
For parents and teachers of the 15 – 18 year olds, facilitators offer a meeting after the class and individual sessions with students, to enable the adults to address any issues that may arise regarding the student community.

WAYS TO ATTEND COURSES & LECTURES
All the courses and lectures outlined above are offered in various locations. Any school or group of people can host a course and open it up to the wider community. An individual can join into an open community event. Opening an event helps to extend the understanding to a variety of people and can be more financially viable for small schools or groups of people.
IN HOUSE TRAINING
Some schools and communities request in-house professional development and community education so as to work collegially on specific areas of interest. Lisa Romero, together with educators from Developing The Self Developing The World, work with schools in professional development sessions to build a collegial and extensive approach to sex and gender issues and the curriculum content. This enables the school to integrate the Social Understanding, Gender & Sexuality lessons with the existing Health and Personal Development Curriculum, and helps to develop and maintain a communally wholistic way of thinking and working with this topic.
All courses and lectures are listed on our calendar.
